Throughout the past 24 days since the first swatch of paint went up, incredible progress has been made!

With each group's ideas for their panels essentially decided, Rebecca and a few other students began working on some of the blank walls. The Lake Norman panel is now nearing completion and other sections of the mural have begun to come to life!

An orange background and a hog's head were painted for the panel related to hog farming. Some light sketches of a farmer, a farm, and more hogs can be seen in the images below.

The section devoted to representing the events at Warren County also underwent significant progress. One protestor was completed, as well as the sketch of a fellow protestor.

One challenge faced by the group in charge of this section is the presence of a pre-existing mural located in the middle of their two panels.

To address this issue, vines of kudzu, an invasive species in North Carolina, border the pre-existing mural and help to set it apart from our mural. To create coherence between the two panels, a railroad will stretch from the Warren County panel to the Davidson panel. The images below capture the unification of the two panels, as well as the kudzu that borders the pre-existing panel.

Plans for the panel devoted to mapping out the environmental justice history of North Carolina developed as well. Though no painting on this section has begun, thorough planning and sketching can be seen in the images below.

One section of the mural remains completely blank as for now, but sketches are being produced currently.

Easter Break provided ample time for painting and we are excited to see the progress that will be made in the coming days!
