They don't call me Julia here. They don't even call me Juj, Jujjy, Juju, Ju, Jule, Jules, Juice, Juul, or Baby Jule! But boi do they have some sobrenombres (nicknames) of their own. Here are a few that they Argentinians have given me...

July - this is the only nickname I've received that's actually related to my name... people here don't really say "Julia" - they always shorten it to "July" (pronounced like Hoolie)

Gordi - kind of like "honey" but the literal translation is basically "fat" lol

(my host mom always calls me this)

Nena - "kid"

(my host mom uses this one a lot too)

Niña - "little girl"

Pequeña - "small one" / "small thing"

(my kinesiologist loves this one)

Flaca - another way to say "small one," translates literally to "thin"

(kinesiologist uses this one a lot too)

Flaquita - a third way to indicate that someone is small, translates to "skinny" but it's like saying "cute little thing" (I get it, people think I'm in shape heh heh heh)

Mi amor - this one's obvious; today the director of our program said, "Adios, mi amor" when I left the office and that was pretty cool... but I bet he says it to everyone ugh so I'm not really his ONLY amor

Tesoro - "treasure," I get this one from Laura a lot

Basically all of your nicknames here, if not based on your real name, relate to your physical appearance or your relationship to someone. For example, my host mom calls me "nena" but someone my age wouldn't call me that. Similarly, you wouldn't call a hefty person "flaca..." Nicknames can also be slightly offensive here but they don't see it like that at all. They call people with thinner eyes "Chino" but it's meant in a very playful, light-hearted way. I feel weird about that so I call this one classmate Julian by his name while all the Argentinians call him "El chino."

Let me know what your favorite sobrenombre is!
